Jordan B.

Jordan B.

Level 10 • Winston-Salem, USA

Jordan, a father of three, stays active on Google Maps by creating lists dedicated to family-friendly restaurants, accessible attractions and playgrounds around Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In addition to family-friendly lists, Jordan has contributed photos, reviews, and accessibility information to minority owned businesses on Google Maps. These contributions keep the local community aware of the diverse range of experiences this region has to offer.

What is your favorite place, experience, photo or video you contributed to Google Maps this year?
The Nido & Mariana Qubein Children's Museum. I loved it because I was able to visit this museum for an hour before they opened to take great photos of all the new exhibits (inside and outside). This museum is the first of its kind in the area and has great partnerships with multiple schools and universities and families in need of special education. I loved being able to showcase this new museum for families who can benefit from a visit. I may have taken over 300 photos that day!

What advice do you have for other Local Guides?
Don't be afraid to stand out or snap a photo of a business or landmark no matter who is looking. My family is now used to me being the last in a store so I can get a great storefront photo. Also, think about each place you contribute to and produce unique photos or perspectives people haven't seen. Showcase handicap-accessible photos from wheelchair level, highlight restroom placement, showcase long lines that may form at busy times if it is mentioned in your review, or highlight seasonal menus that showcase reasons to visit again.

What do you like most about the Local Guides community?
I love the supportive nature of Local Guides. From my perspective, no one shows an ego and new contributors are celebrated the same as seasoned Local Guides. Level 10 Local Guides join meet-ups of newbies and give great advice on making better contributions. At the same time, we learn from new Local Guides - great tricks and more efficient ways to contribute.

What makes a place or experience worth rating/reviewing?
Almost anything! Don't be afraid to contribute. I love rating and reviewing brand new businesses to help them get more exposure.

I also love contributing to businesses that are unique and offer something no one else does (accessibility, gluten-free items, vegan choices, LGBTQIA support, diversity, family and kid-friendly, etc.) and making lists so people can find them more easily. I enjoy rating the hole-in-the-wall shop or restaurant that is off the beaten path (hard to find, in another part of the neighborhood, surrounded by chain stores) to give them a chance to compete.

What is your favorite feature of Google Maps?
PHOTOS! I check this point of interest first, even before reviews. I love understanding the food and drink I am about to try, how to get to a playground in a local park, understanding if it has a ramp or elevator for my friends, and checking out the vibe of any point of interest. One photo can speak a thousand words.
